The old river "Pekel A" - literally "salt water" - is the namesake of the villages Oude and Nieuwe Pekela. The land along the Pekel A, purchased by the Pekelder Company in 1599, was developed for the peat and agricultural industry. The villages thus created then developed into a center of the peat colonial and international shipping industry and the strawboard industry.

Oude Pekela is a wonderful village for walking, shopping and from there to explore the area.
